I was never into K-pop. Not even a little bit. But music has a funny way of finding you when you least expect it, and my journey down the rabbit hole started with a single Spotify recommendation: DPR IAN.
I instantly loved, not only his music, but also his character: he was creative, he had depth in his videos and the way of his thinking really impressed me. He has such a duality, he is deep and a bit dark, which I love about him. I completely hyper-focused: I listened to every single song and video he ever created, watched every interview, and mentally transported myself straight to Korea.
Then, the YouTube algorithm did its magic. It suggested I check out Jackson Wang.
The true turning point happened a bit later. I was playing around with my VR, looking for a new exercise program, when YouTube threw a recommendation my way: a 360° VR video of GOT7 performing "My Home." I recognized the name GOT7 from my Jackson deep-dive, so I figured, why not?
Right after that, YouTube suggested the 360° VR version of "Love Loop." Oh my God, again, what a surreal experience: they were right in front of me singing to me. That was it. I was a goner. I had to know absolutely everything about these seven guys.
I went into full detective mode. I watched every single reality show, listened to every single song, and researched everything from their historic album sales to their fandom, Ahgases. There was just something so magnetic, so uniquely raw about GOT7 that I couldn't ignore.
But as I dug deeper, a wave of sadness hit me. Why didn't I find them earlier? By the time I discovered them, they had already released "NANANA" and most of them were focusing heavily on their solo projects, and plus two of the members were doing their mandatory military service. I felt so late to the party, wishing so badly that I could see them all together again. However, knowing they were fractured by duty meant I just had to be patient. While I waited, I kept the fire alive by creating endless playlists of my absolute favourite GOT7 tracks: Page, Face, Begging on My Knees, Follow Me, My Home, Karma, You are, Teenager, Thursday, I am Me, Aura, Crazy, If, and Runaway. I played them on loop, dreaming of the day they would finally reunite.
Out of nowhere, they dropped the teaser pictures for their comeback album. I remember screaming like crazy! The anticipation was intense, but my patient waiting paid off.
Suddenly, "Python" was here.
Watching them sing all their hits live, unified as seven, was everything I had ever hoped for. After feeling like I missed out for so long, I was finally experiencing the magic as it happened. I was, without a doubt, the happiest Ahgase alive.
While I truly love and support all of their solo endeavours, nothing on earth compares to the group. Because when the seven of them are in the same room? It’s pure, undeniable magic.
Looking back at my journey, I finally get why this fandom is, Ahgases are so fiercely loyal. If you’re reading this and wondering how a self-proclaimed K-pop sceptic fell this hard, let me break down exactly why you can't help but fall head-over-heels for GOT7:

Once again, the obsession repeated. I dove headfirst into his songs and videos, blasted all of his collaborations and interviews. I was completely blown away by his incredible voice and dancing; and also pure, unshakeable confidence and intelligence. Naturally, I looked up his background and discovered something that changed everything: he was a member of a Korean group called GOT7.

Oh my god. I was completely, utterly, totally and deeply in love. It was such a surreal experience to be in the centre being surrounded by seven guys including Jackson Wang and singing and dancing along with them. How many times did I jump into VR and sing with them, dance with them: million times?

Then, the military era was finally over, and the moment I had been waiting for arrived. I thought, Finally, I'm going to experience them in real time. I'll get to see how Ahgases react!
Out of nowhere, they dropped the teaser pictures for their comeback album. I remember screaming like crazy! The anticipation was intense, but my patient waiting paid off.
Suddenly, "Python" was here.
By this time, I was fully familiar with the K-pop structure. I wasn't just a casual observer anymore; I knew exactly what to look for. And GOT7 delivered absolutely everything. The stunning music video, the incredible music show stages, the chaotic reality show appearances, the announcements of concerts in Seoul and Thailand, and to top it all off, a full group appearance on Killing Voice.
Watching them sing all their hits live, unified as seven, was everything I had ever hoped for. After feeling like I missed out for so long, I was finally experiencing the magic as it happened. I was, without a doubt, the happiest Ahgase alive.

K-pop contracts are scary, and the infamous "7-year itch" breaks up a lot of groups. But GOT7? They looked the industry in the eye and said, "Not today." When their contracts ended in 2021, they left their massive agency together, fought a legal battle to keep the rights to their name, and stayed as whole unit. They literally chose each other. If that isn't true soulmate behaviour, I don’t know what is!
They are Living, Breathing Chaos:
If you think K-pop idols are always perfectly polite and quiet, GOT7 will shatter that illusion in five seconds flat. Between Jackson being the king of dramatic reactions, BamBam roasting everyone in sight, and the rest of the guys treating their leader Jay B like a human playground, watching their reality shows is like hanging out with a chaotic group of friends who drank way too much iced americano. Your face will hurt from laughing.
A Global Friend Group That Speaks Your Language:
Having members from South Korea, Hong Kong, Thailand, Taiwan/the US means they are the ultimate global squad. They switch between Korean, English, Thai, Cantonese and Mandarin so fast it’ll give you whiplash. No matter where you are in the world, one of these boys is ready to comfort you (or make fun of you) in a language you understand.
Their Music Glow-Up is Unreal:
They started out in 2014 doing backflips and martial arts tricking on stage (absolute legends, honestly), gave us the ultimate self-love anthem with Just Right, and then aged like fine wine into this incredibly smooth, late-night R&B vibe. From older masterpieces, like Follow Me, My House, to the absolute hypnotic masterpiece Python, there is a GOT7 song for literally every single mood.
Seven Total Overachievers:
The cool thing about GOT7 is that they aren't just a group; they are seven individual powerhouses. They write and produce their own music now. Plus, outside the group, Jackson is running a fashion empire and making cinematic solo albums, Jinyoung is crushing it as an actor in massive K-dramas (and I watched them all!), and the others are dropping incredible solo tracks. They’re basically a group of CEOs who happen to be best friends - nah, brothers really, as they describe each other.
The Fandom (Ahgases/IGOT7 - meaning baby bird) is a Literal Warm Hug:
Coming late into a massive fandom can feel super intimidating, but Ahgases are a completely different breed. They don’t care if you've been here since day one or day one thousand; they just open the door, hand you a green lightstick, and welcome you to the family, to be precise, to the nest. Finding a community that is this kind, supportive, and fiercely protective and loyal to the boys made me realize that being an Ahgase isn't just about loving a music group: it’s about finding a global family where you instantly belong.
I may have found them late, but I am here for the long haul. I am an Ahgase, and an Ahgase forever. IGOT7 and GOT7 forever! 💚🐥
Now, seriously, where can I find and buy the lightstick? And when are you coming to my hometown for a concert?
